My Groundhog's Day

Happy Groundhog’s Day!

I love Groundhog’s Day. I don’t exactly know why but I do. For years I’ve made these groundhog treats for the kids’ classes but this year, unfortunately, homemade treats weren’t allowed. Also this year I forgot to add the M&M’s for the cheeks but they’re still kind of cute.

I woke up with a start this morning. Early this morning. Something like 4:57 a.m. I had my phone near me so I’d hear the alarm. I really needed to get up and put in some time with that C25K app. So anyway, at the crack of dawn I’ve got a text. My mind started racing; who would text me in the middle of the night? Because it totally felt like the middle of the night. I grabbed the phone and saw that it was Punxsutawney Phil. He’d seen his shadow, 6 more weeks of winter. Just figured I should know.

Not exactly. I did happen to text “GROUNDHOG” to a particular number so I could get this text. I just didn’t figure it would come in the dark. When I was asleep. What’s that groundhog thinking? Or that Chamber of Commerce or whatever? Probably that I wouldn’t be sleeping with my phone next to my head. Or nothing.

My stomach felt about 1000% better this morning. So decent in fact, that I felt ready for Week 1 Day2. Still, it’d been a couple of days so I wimped out and did Week 1 Day 1. At this point I have no idea what the difference is but I’m sure they would’ve been additional seconds of running. Couldn’t be risking that. The app started me out with a 5 minute walk so I did a lap around the cemetery. I was curious about the fellow buried there last week. I’m not sure why I assumed it was a fellow but it was. He was born in 1931. So what war would he have fought in? Korean? There was only a small, probably temporary plaque with his name and dates. I’m probably weird this way but I want to know more. Did he live here most of his life? Did he have a wife? Children? Grandchildren? Did he work out in The Area? Did he spend mornings at Spudnuts hanging out with his buddies? So many unanswered questions but the app tells me to run and I must.

I made my way down to the river and who should I pass, chatting with someone but my neighbor three doors down. For the past few years, she and her husband have undertaken the most awesome(ly expensive) renovation of an “F” house in the history of Hanford. This house now makes the real estate it sits on look like a postage stamp and the third floor turret will make a fabulous lookout when martial law is declared. If you aren’t from around here it’s probably hard to get a real idea of what I’m talking about. There really aren’t words for how big this house is compared to those around it. It’s colossal. And it’s a testament to how cool our block is because even though they’ve lived next door to a dilapidated house that probably should’ve been burned to the ground the day the police came and hauled away the mentally ill woman who lived there, they chose to make their house what they wanted instead of building even bigger or at least at less expense somewhere else. Like somewhere with a view or even along the river. Pardon me, just daydreaming about what I’d do even though I love my neighbors.

So, I ran and walked and ran and walked and turned around and did the same. And passed my neighbor again. And ran and walked and ran and walked some more. I wonder if this looks silly to people. I guess it would be pretty strange if they paid any attention to begin with. Wish me luck; tomorrow I’ll really do Week 1 Day 2. I think.

  1. I love Groundhog's Day, too! I always thought I was the only one. When I was a kid, my mom always fixed sausage (ground hog) for breakfast and updated us on the weather forecast for winter or spring. As I type, I'm watching the movie, as I do every year on February 2.

Good luck with the C25K. I'm excited to watch your progress.

  2. Good luck with you run/walk tomorrow - I have not ventured back out since the cold weather hit...need to get my butt in gear!

And what is up with no homemade treats in the classroom - how lame! Marissa and Brynn made those same treats in their cooking class today - they are soooo cute!
